President’s Message June 2020

OKAPT  Members,

Happy Summer! This year has been not what most of us expected. We have all faced different challenges in our work. But isn’t that what life is all about?

Telehealth has been a challenge for me while working with littles. I wish I could say that every session was great and better than the last, but I am not afraid to be vulnerable and say some days really SUCKED!

Facing the challenge of my kids being home and trying to keep the littles focused on telehealth, I felt more like a performer than a therapist. That is okay, though! They all survived and I did too!

I encourage you to look back at your experiences through this pandemic as growth. Do not be afraid to own your mistakes. Reflection helps you make changes that can help you on a journey to be a seasoned professional.

Thank you, once again, for showing up and being present for the children of our great state!

President’s Message February 2020

OKAPT  Members,

I am writing this letter after completing an exhilarating three-day workshop with Terry Kottman in Corpus Christi, TX. It was a great opportunity for me to continue to hone my skills as an Adlerian Play Therapist. Recently, one of our board members, Nancy Soliz, completed her training to become a certified Theraplay Practitioner. Congrats to her! These types of opportunities are important for us as therapists. I would encourage each of you to look for ways that you can expand your skills in play therapy. Our field is a fast-growing specialty and it is imperative for us to continue personal and professional growth so that we may meet our goals.

Our annual conference in Oklahoma City was a great success! Thank you to all of you who attended and provided support. Paris Goodyear-Brown’s training was informational and uplifting. We are encouraged by the feedback we received and will continue to work toward bringing informative and popular speakers to our annual conference.

One item that I would like to clarify that was discussed in our annual membership meeting: the OK Behavioral Health Licensing Board did table the agenda item for the LPC RPT Specialty and in a subsequent board meeting, they denied the application. Although this may be disheartening to some, this board will continue to follow the trends of the other states and look for other opportunities to support our credentials on a state level.

I would like to thank you for your dedication to your profession and the difference you make in the children of our state.

President’s Message December 2019

Season Greetings OKAPT  Members,

I hope you are all enjoying the Holiday season! It is such a busy time of year and I know we are all excited to get a break.

Just a reminder the conference will be January 24th and 25th in Oklahoma City for the first time ever. We are excited to announce after dedicated work, Paris Goodyear-Brown has agreed to be our keynote speaker. Don’t miss out on this awesome training session and opportunity to network with other OKAPT members. You can register at the We will be have the Annual Meeting after lunch on Saturday, January 25th. I hope to see you all there!

As the year and decade comes to a close I want to encourage you to self reflect. Self reflection is very important in the work we do as therapists. It helps our personal growth along with professional growth as a play therapist. Reflect on the accomplishments that you have achieved as well as mistakes you may have made. Take this information to continue to push yourself to become the person you want to be. We have all worked so very hard to improve the lives of others and, I am very proud to be a part of all we have done and continue to do.

I am very excited to start this new year and decade with OKAPT. We will continue to serve those in need and make a lasting impact on the world around us.
