Course Summaries
+ Drowning in Empathy: Ethical Considerations for Play Therapists
Friday Morning – Duration: 3 hours
Presenters: NanDee Walker, NCC, LPC-S, RPT-S™
& Melissa Winterscheid, LPC-S, RPT-S™
Course Description: Working as a caregiver utilizing play therapy in today’s world has become increasingly more challenging. Play Therapists willingly engage in high stress encounters with clients and their guardians all while attempting to navigate the Post-Pandemic life of technological and administrative demands, financial concerns, a morass of politics, and a cornucopia of personal life situations. Marked levels of professional caregivers report a high degree of compassion fatigue and/or burnout, with Play Therapists reporting a lower than expected percentage of perceived self-efficacy. This presentation will help participants understand the connection between empathy levels and one’s own access to resiliency; giving participant’s permission to acknowledge challenges and engage in quantifiable change in self-care practices.
+ Don’t be the Villain in Someone Else’s Play Therapy Supervision Story
Friday Afternoon – Duration: 3 hours
Presenters: NanDee Walker, NCC, LPC-S, RPT-S™ & Melissa Winterscheid, LPC-S, RPT-S™
Course Description: Supervision is a complex and powerful process of interacting with new therapists still learning ethical practices and healthy professional development. Play Therapy Supervision engages therapists at many stages of development in playful and empirically driven Play Therapy modalities. This interactive in-park training will enable and empower Supervisors to increase their own understanding and utilization of Supervision Theories and how to apply those theories to Supervision in and parallel to Playful Supervision. Participants will explore their own accountability as Supervisors in order to increase effectiveness in both the Supervisor and the Supervisee.
+ An Embodied Approach to Sandtray Play Therapy: Integrating Nervous System Wisdom and Play
Saturday – Duration: 6 hours
Presenter: Waldo Winborn, LPCC, RPT™, RST C/T
Course Description: This 6-hour experiential workshop invites play therapists to step into the tray themselves and discover how embodied, symbolic play can deepen healing. Drawing from the traditions of Lowenfeld and Kalff alongside contemporary neuroscience, Waldo Winborn, LPCC, RPT™, RST C/T, will guide participants through a blend of lecture, reflection, and hands-on practice. Together we will explore the role of the nervous system in play therapy, the power of relational presence, and ethical use of miniatures in practice.
Through experiential triads, guided journaling, and group reflection, attendees will experience first-hand the therapeutic powers of play—emotional expression, mastery, safety, and integration. Each participant will also receive a portable sand tray to continue exploring this work beyond the training. Participants will leave with practical tools, renewed perspective, and a personal felt sense of how sandtray play therapy supports both clients and therapists in moving toward wholeness.
