+ What Aretha Taught Us: Respect and Boundaries to Strengthen Ethical Decision- Making in Play Therapy
Friday Morning – Duration: 3 hours
Presenters: Simmone Jones, LPC-S, RPT-S™
Course Description: This interactive ethics training explores how healthy boundaries form the foundation of ethical play therapy practice. Participants will engage in guided discussions, self-reflection, case scenarios, and experiential activities designed to strengthen ethical reasoning and professional judgment. Topics include recognizing healthy versus unhealthy boundaries, identifying personal boundary styles (people-pleasing, rigid, porous, and healthy), responding to boundary violations, maintaining therapeutic relationships, managing self-disclosure, navigating dual relationships, handling gifts and social media, working with parents and caregivers, cultural considerations, and developing strategies for preventing compassion fatigue and burnout. Participants will leave with practical tools they can immediately apply to clinical practice while remaining consistent with ethical standards for play therapists and mental health professionals.
Learning Objectives:
- Explore the psychology of boundaries across the lifespan
› Attachment theory and boundary formation
› Trauma and its impact on boundary development
› Family systems and learned boundary patterns
› How childhood experiences influence adult boundary styles
› Therapist self-awareness and personal boundary patterns
› Boundary repair and modeling healthy boundaries in play therapy
› Developmentally appropriate boundary education for children - Differentiate between professional healthy, porous, rigid, and people-pleasing boundary styles and explain how each may influence therapeutic relationships and clinical decision- making.
- Apply ethical decision-making skills to play therapy case scenarios involving topics extended and beyond self-disclosure, dual relationships, parent interactions, gifts, social media, confidentiality, therapist self-care, and professional boundaries. Participants will apply the ACA Code of Ethics and APT Best Practices to strengthen ethical reasoning, reduce boundary violations, and enhance competent play therapy practice.
+ The Versatile Play Therapy Supervisor: The Discrimination Model Applied to Play Therapy Supervision
Friday Afternoon – Duration: 3 hours
Presenters: Jessica Russo, MS, LPC-S (OK), LPC (TX), NCC, RPT-S, BC-TMH, ACS™
Course Description: This presentation equips supervisors with a practical framework for applying Bernard and Goodyear’s (2014) Discrimination Model to play therapy supervision. Participants will learn to incorporate this model into their own supervisory practice, developing skill in selecting the supervisory role and focus that best fits each situation with a play therapist supervisee. The training will also explore how this flexible approach supports the therapeutic powers of play and strengthens supervisees’ growth in self-development and case presentation, giving supervisors a clearer lens for guiding that process. Through case vignettes and applied practice, attendees will build confidence and concrete strategies for using the Discrimination Model in their own play therapy supervision sessions.
Learning Objectives:
- Review the supervisory roles and focus areas that make up Bernard’s Discrimination Model and how it can be utilized by the Play Therapist Supervisor.
- Identify the unique characteristics of play therapy supervision.
- Apply the Discrimination model of supervision to play therapy supervision through mock play therapy supervision scenarios using case vignettes.
+ Attachment as the Antidote: Relational Healing for Trauma with Insights from Theraplay®
Saturday – Duration: 6 hours
Presenter: Mandy Jones-Fischer, LCSW, RPT-S™, JD
Course Description: Trauma disrupts a child’s sense of safety, connection, regulation, and trust within relationships. This training explores how attachment-centered, relationally focused interventions can serve as a powerful pathway toward healing for children and families impacted by trauma. Drawing from attachment theory, interpersonal neurobiology, and principles inspired by Theraplay®, participants will examine how playful, attuned, and experiential interactions help restore felt safety, strengthen connection, and support co- regulation.
Through a trauma-informed and developmentally responsive lens, clinicians will learn how relational play therapy interventions can support emotional regulation, attachment security, and resilience in children experiencing complex trauma, anxiety, developmental disruptions, and relational wounds. Special attention will be given to the play therapist’s use of attunement, structure, engagement, nurture, and challenge within the therapeutic relationship.
Participants will explore practical play-based strategies that promote parent-child connection, deepen caregiver attunement, and foster corrective relational experiences. The training will include experiential exercises, case examples, and interventions that can be integrated into play therapy work with children, caregivers, and families across a variety of treatment settings.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe the impact of trauma on attachment, emotional regulation, and relational development in children
- Identify key principles of attachment-centered and Theraplay®-informed interventions within trauma treatment
- Demonstrate at least three play-based relational interventions that support co- regulation and felt safety
- Explain how attunement, structure, playful engagement, nurture, and supportive challenge contribute to corrective relational experiences in therapy
- Apply attachment-focused strategies to strengthen caregiver-child connection through play therapy
- Identify the role caregivers’ attachment patterns play in the healing of children
