Course Summaries

+ Workshop Overview

Gain an understanding of basic terminology relating to trans youth and diagnostic criteria for Gender Dysphoria. Be informed culturally as to what challenges and experiences they may face. Discuss and explore therapeutic techniques for trans youth- with special attention given to the needs of autistic trans youth- and ways to support their guardians within a Play Therapy framework.

+ Workshop Description

Please join us for a 3 hour mixed media presentation about providing Play Therapy with Trans Youth! The presentation will begin with a brief overview of transgender social and clinical history, terminology, and the differences between sexuality and gender identity. Participants will then be informed of cultural experiences and challenges that trans youth may face. We will discuss gender exploration in play, with a focus on common themes, and activities and interventions designed to help explore gender identity and build a strong sense of self. The presentation will also include a framework for supporting guardians with special attention given to autistic trans youth and their guardians. Participants are invited to bring questions; case vignettes will be discussed in lieu of participant discussion, if necessary. (Please note that “trans” in this material references non-cisgender youth of a variety of identities.)
